Ugh this scene does things to my heart I can’t even. Buffy’s being snarky because it’s what she does, and Angel just…staggers her, because he isn’t just this smug guy who shows up out of nowhere, but someone lonely and isolated. And Buffy’s compassion rises to the forefront and we can see in this moment how desperately perfect these two can be, the slayer who can have friends but never ones who understand her completely, and the stranger who has no one but the mission. They’re two pieces of a puzzle that fit perfectly together at this moment, and the attraction that they feel is far more than that of lust or redemption- it’s kindred spirits recognizing the one person out there who has what they yearn for.

“I’ve got a friend down there. Or at least a potential friend. Do you know what it’s like to have a friend?

…That wasn’t supposed to be a stumper.”
